Southern Green is about a quarter of a mile
from Rushden'v village centre. The majority of the houses here are
thatched . In former times it was a lot wetter than it is today, though
several ponds still survive including one that was used for washing carts
in the garden of Youngloves.

Bill
Skipp has kindly supplied the old photograph of Stile End taken
circa 1900. The two women standing in front are:
Jane
Dowler (Bill's grandmother) married to Alfred Skipp.
Jane's
mother - Sarah Cole (born 1836) married to William Dowler.

Youngloves
|
|
|
|
Youngloves was the home of Percy
Portsmouth the sculptor. During the Second World War he kept a dismantled
aeroplane in his barn. He said that should the Germans invade he was going
to rebuild it and fly to Ireland. People living in a neighbouring house have
seen a man with heavy sideburns, wearing a smock in the garden. This is how
Percy dressed when he was alive!
