Once again I am pleased to say that crime in our area is still very low, we did have three garage beaks in the Ashwell area at the start of the month, nothing appeared to have been stolen, please see the advice below. Call us immediately if you see or hear anything suspicious, I would love to get my hands on the offenders.

Within the past month two quad bikes have been stolen from outbuildings in the East Herts Rural area. A third one was attempted but the offenders were unsuccessful even though a black ford vehicle was used to ram open a door.

Other vehicles seen at the time or prior to the thefts are a dark blue 4x4 and a flat bed red lorry with a hi-ab crane on the rear.

The occupants of the lorry, two white males with Irish accents, were driving around farms and stable areas asking for scrap metal.

The above trailer was stolen from Weston if you see it please let us know so we can return it to the owner.

There is a e-mail going around from the HSBC Bank this is a scam do not reply to this e-mail. HSBC banks never send out E-mails to customers, as do none of the other banks. The e-mail says that there is a internal message about your account when you log on to the false HSBC web site they request your ID number and bank account details THIS IS A SCAM.

The Graffiti that has been appearing in Ashwell has been solved. The word ‘TOXIK’ an letters ‘AM’ have appeared. Four local youths are being dealt with for criminal damage and all offences have been detected. Many thanks to all the people and particularly the local youngsters that helped me in the investigation.

On the 4^th March we had a report of coursers in Nuthampstead, we were supplied with the make and index of the vehicle the offenders were using, despite 3 police cars attending and scrambling the Police Helicopter we never found them. After a bit of digging I phoned the car owners mobile phone number who was most surprised when I introduced myself. Todate he has not returned to our area.

·        an alarm will make a burglar think that I've got something worth stealing

Wrong! Burglars know that they can find something worth stealing in almost any home - alarmed or not

·        nobody takes any notice when alarms go off

Wrong again! Burglars take notice and they don't hang around when they hear the noise, remember burglars don't want to get caught.

Fact! A properly designed and installed alarm system will give added peace of mind and security when fitted to a property already benefiting from good window and door security.

Fact! You are far more likely to be burgled without an alarm than with one.

Burglars simply do not like alarms.

There are three main types of alarm system that can be fitted to your home

·        Bells only - this system activates a bell box usually mounted high up on the front of a house. It is a purely local system that relies on scaring off the burglar or getting some kind of response from neighbours.

·        Speech Dialer - this system dials a pre-selected telephone number in addition to the bells being activated. This allows the person contacted to attend the house to determine what is happening. It is important to understand that this system cannot be set to dial 999 or any other police numbers

·        Police/Response - similar to the speech dialer except that the number contacted will be an Alarm Receiving Centre who can determine if the alarm is genuine or not. If genuine, they will contact the police who will decide upon the appropriate response to your situation.

Hertfordshire Police strongly advise that you obtain the services of a reputable and accredited alarm system provider who will be able to advise you accordingly.

As a general rule, reputable suppliers tend to be registered with a national accreditation body. In the world of security systems, the main organisations are NACOSS and BSIA.

If you look in the local yellow pages for burglar alarms you will find several locally-based companies. You are recommended to contact at least two companies who are part of these organisations.

I think that the following makes interesting reading about the new ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR ORDERS, this one ended up on a 15 year old boy.

FIFTEEN-year-old Ian Evans of Hatch Green, Little Hallingbury, Essex has been given a two-year Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) following a successful application to the courts by the Bishops Stortford Community team.

The team obtained the order from East Herts youth court last Tuesday (March 1). The application was fully supported by the East Herts Community Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) which includes the Constabulary, East Herts District Council.

Under the conditions, Ian is prohibited from:

- Entering Bishops Stortford other than to attend his place of education ¡V Birchwood High School, Parsonage Lane, Bishops Stortford between the hours of 8.30am and 4.15pm only.

- Entering Bishops Stortford unless accompanied and supervised by an appropriate adult (guardian).

- Not to use threatening, insulting words or behaviour likely to cause alarm, harassment or distress towards any person including any members of any police authority/constabulary in England and Wales.

- To remain at his home address between the hours of 19:00 and 07:00.

- Not to assault any person or threaten unlawful violence in Hertfordshire or Essex.

- Not to cause criminal damage, to any property other than property belonging solely to Ian Evans.

"We have been working very hard to gather evidence and work with the community to enable us to be successful in our application for this ASBO," explained Inspector Paul Lawrence from the Bishops Stortford Community Team.

"This case is unusual in that Ian's family, particularly his parents, have been extremely supportive of the application for the ASBO. We hope that the order will be the beginning of a turnaround in Ian's behaviour and we are encouraged by their attitude and support.

Paul added: "ASBOs are always a last resort, but we will continue to deal effectively with individuals who insist on making lives a misery for residents in Bishops Stortford and the surrounding areas. We need the help of the public to ensure we can not only gather evidence for the ASBO itself, but also to report breaches of an ASBO. I would encourage anyone who is subject to behaviour which breaches this order to contact the police as soon as possible."

  If you consider items such as gardening equipment, power tools, golf clubs fishing tackle etc. etc. this may run into hundreds if not thousands of pounds!

WE WOULD ADVISE YOU TO CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING SECURITY ADVICE

·        Invest in a good quality padlock

Remember the lock is only as good as the hasp so ensure that this is also of a good quality

·        Do not leave tools lying  around as these could be used to force entry

·        Consider the purchase of high pitch shed alarm these are cheap and do not need to be wired up to the mains, most DIY stores sell them.
