Rural Watch

For April 2005

Covering Arbury, Ermine, Weston & Sandon Wards.

At about mid day on the 29th March a Burglary took place in Rooks nest lane Therfield, a Jardines parrot in green and orange was stolen in its cage. This is a rare parrot and should be easy to identify.

At the beginning of this month there was another Burglary this time in Barkway High Street, the offenders entered the property by a rear door and stole a number of articles.

There has been one farm workshop Burglary, there is no doubt that any workshop needs to, be alarmed. Offenders are normally after power tools but as we all know they will steal anything there can lay their hands on.

On the 12th April a chap in a van approached an old lady and asked her if she wanted her drive tarmacking. She appeared to have said ‘no’ and then left her address to take her dog for a walk. On her return she found the chap had spread bitumen over a small area of concrete and was requiring about £500 for the pleasure. I viewed this as an Attempted Deception and the chap was duly arrested and taken away.

A chap in Yorkshire has been charged with the theft of a trailer from our area that occurred over three years ago. The owner had supplied Police with details of the serial number at the time of the theft. The trailer was stopped last week and identified, serial numbers stay on the Police National Computer for life.

Ever wondered how offenders break into one car in a car park with 100 + vehicles in and pick the one with a laptop computer or mobile phone in it?

They can use a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. (Until recently this was denied by the industry)

How offenders do it (very basically).

They set a mobile phone to search for other Bluetooth enabled devices.  The phone then searches & identifies other devices.  Up to 10 metres in the open & 2 metres if in a car.

They can fine-tune the search so it almost acts as a direction indicator.

Not only does it tell them where the laptop is; it tells the make and model!

This will also work on other Bluetooth enabled devices.

For this to work all devices have to be on or in standby mode.  If your devices are fully off it will not work.

BE WARNED! Don’t leave valuables in your car unattended.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward following an assault in Aston Lane, Aston in the early hours of Thursday March 24.
At approximately 2.30am on Thursday morning, an argument took place between a male and female. The male offender hit the victim, a 15-year-old girl from Stevenage, several times to the left side of her face, before making off in a yellow Fiat Punto motor vehicle.
It is believed that two women, travelling in a silver RAV4, stopped to assist the victim and her friend. Police are asking these two women to contact them as part of this investigation.
They are asked to contact PC Faye Cannon or PC Ben Dixon on 0845 33 00 222 or the Eastern Area Crime Desk on 01992 533 002. Alternatively, please telephone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You may be entitled to a reward.

A gentleman who lives not to far away had a bit of a shock the other day, a bank called him to tell him that his £10,000 loan had been approved and which account would he like it paid into. The only problem was that he had never applied for a loan.

We are in the process of retrieving all loan application forms to see if we can find any of the offender’s fingerprints or DNA.

SO

Be careful when throwing away old documents, bank statements and credit card receipts. Criminals search dustbins for these.

Shred old documents to prevent bin raiders from acquiring information about you and your identity.
