House Burglaries

On the 13th October a house burglary occurred in Kelshall, the offenders entered via a downstairs window that was opened with gardening tools that appeared to have been left out. Jewellery was stolen and the premises did not have an alarm.

We did have one house burglary at the end of last month this occurred in Radwell, the offender entered the house in daylight via an unlock door and stole the occupants purse. She was asleep at the time and saw him leave via the front entrance.  If you see anyone suspicious please call us immediately.

Between the 24th & 26th October a trailer twin axle was stolen from Southern Green. It was post coded so hopefully it will turn up.

On Sunday 17th October we had a call from a farmer in Ashwell who is having some building work done. He stated that a van had pulled up into his yard and loaded a cement mixer into the rear. He did not recognise the vehicle and suspected that a theft had taken place. I was at Radwell when I heard the call come over the air, call me old fashioned, experienced or just lucky. I high tailed it up the motorway at 130mph with all the lights and horns on went into east into Bedfordshire at the Langford turn headed for Potton. I stopped the van near the Hinxworth turn and spookily it had a cement mixer in the back. So in less that 10 minutes after the call I had the two culprits in the rear of my plod car with handcuff on. The owners have their cement mixer back; we have the van (which we will apply for a destruction order on). A very good call.

On the 13 October a 12-year-old lad from Weston was convicted at Stevenage Magistrates court of 18 traffic offences, he was given an 18-month disqualification. I did apply for an Anti Social behaviour order but this was not granted

Caravans seem to be on the menu for the thieves that frequent our area; we had one stolen from the Ashwell area that appeared to have had all the normal locks on it. Please be careful if you own one, a friend of mine takes the wheels off his when it not being used.

In the west of the county we have had a number of houses entered when the occupants have been asleep. The offenders then will steal keys for cars that are parked on the drive. So sleep with your car keys!

A chap that we recently dealt with for a theft amounting to over £40,00 was ask why he had choosing that particular place to break into, he replied; - ‘ the yard was unlit, no alarm, keys had been left in machinery, gates were unlocked and there was no dog’.

Illeagal Hare Coursing

On the 14th October illegal coursers were reported in Newnham then the same vehicle appeared in Wallington and I finally caught up with them in Weston. The vehicle was being used without insurance (vehicle insurance details can now be accessed via our police computer) so the driver and the owner will appear in the local Magistrates court in due course. The others were reported for trespassing in pursuit of game.

On the 10th October illegal Coursers were reported in Wallington, Police attended and found the coursers had left their vehicle parked on the side of the road, and it appears that they made off in a 4X4. We have the vehicle (for safekeeping) and are waiting for the owner to come and see us.

POLICE are appealing for owners to contact them, following the recovery of almost 200 items of jewellery believed to have been stolen from house burglaries in the Hertfordshire area.

Jewellery to the approximate value of £35,000 has been recovered and a Hertford man is currently assisting police with investigations.
Detective Sergeant Graeme Smith of the Burglary Unit said: “As well as holding monetary value, we are sure that much of the recovered items have sentimental value and we are keen to reunite the items with their rightful owners.
“If you have lost jewellery in a burglary, please make contact with us to arrange a viewing.”
Jewellery and other items recovered includes the following:
- Engagement, wedding, signet, eternity and dress rings
- Necklaces
- Earrings
- An exclusive Swiss travel clock
Owners are asked to contact Hertford Police Station on 01992 533521 or to drop into the station between 9am-5pm to view the items.

Recently a letter was received from a ‘clairvoyant’ from PO box 200, Geneva, 7 Switzerland.   It states that the person it was addressed to has 3 strokes of luck coming her way, but to receive this luck & more details she is to send £19 & encloses paperwork asking for confirmation of bank & credit card details.  It then warns that if money is not paid then a shifty shadow may enter her life - he may be wearing a mask & and may enter her home & the outcome is disturbing. Lease do not fall for this scam, if I ever manage to get my hands on the author the outcome will be disturbing, but only for them!
