15,000 Registration Numbers Checked in North Herts.

On the 16th August Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Police conducted a major operation in the North Herts Area, this was targeted against cross boarder criminals that travel. We positioned ANPR (Automatic number plate readers) on three of the main roads that enter our area, all ANPR can read now read both carriageways (front and rear). We checked 15,000 registration numbers, of which 200 vehicles were of interest to us. All were stopped and all occupants were dealt with.

We will be conducting more of these operations and I would like to stress that we are only after the ‘Naughty people’ and as my grandmother would have said ‘the sort of people that sleep in their vests’.

If you don’t break into to other peoples houses, steal, assault members of the public and drive without documents ect we will not be interested in you. So please do not think we are after you.

We do need more information to put in to our ANPR, if you see strange cars or vans etc where you believe the occupants are up to no good please call us with registration numbers.

Lock Shrouds

I have secured (£3,000) funding for 100 lock shrouds that

are now available. Please contact Chris Brabrook at

chris.brabrook@herts.pnn.police.uk if you would like one,

Unfortunately we can only supply these for use in

The North Herts Area. These are a shroud that covers

A padlock to a barn or shed and are made out of

6mm plate steel. They prevent the padlock being cropped.

So far the crooks have not manage to find how

to get past them. If you are outside the North Herts

boundaries and would like a Lock Shroud please contact

your local Police and see if they can get funding.

They normally cost £40 each but the manufacturer will

Give discounts for bulk orders.

I have just heard that East Herts Council are putting in a order for 30 lock Shrouds

Bogus Callers

Unfortunately, those at greatest risk from a bogus caller are the most vulnerable in our communities, such as the very elderly and those who live on their own. That is what makes bogus caller crime such a despicable offence. You can help prevent bogus callers from operating in

Your area by looking out for potential victims and protecting them. If you have vulnerable elderly neighbours, particularly those who live on their own, go round and talk to them. Make sure that they have a door chain fitted and that they check on the identity of any callers they do not know.

Also let them know what they can ask you for help if they are in any doubt and keep and eye out yourself for strangers knocking at their door.

If we all looked out for our neighbours in this way, we could greatly reduce the number of vulnerable people who become victims of this very distressing offence.

If you suspect bogus callers are operating in your area then contact your local Police or contact Crimestoppers to report information on criminal activities – 0845 33 00 222. I would like to thank those of you who pass on information and take the time to note the registration numbers of cars

suspected of being involved in crime. As previously stated this is a big help to the Police, thanks again.

Crime in Other Areas

Cambridgeshire Police are reporting during the past week there has been a number of Distraction Burglaries on the Ely Sector whereby the offenders have been posing as Police Officers to gain admission to peoples homes. As I have said so many times they will use every pretext so be on your guard, and please remember to look out for the elderly and less able within our communities.

The distraction method where offenders pose as police officers or staff and claim to be pursuing criminals is relatively uncommon in our area.

Residents should refuse entry to any person purporting to be from the police unless valid photo identification can be produced.

Also Mid Herts have seen in recent weeks an increase in walk-in burglaries so please find listed some tips to safe guard your homes: -

·        To reduce the risk of becoming a burglary victim, always:

·        Make sure you close and lock all doors and windows when you are out.

·        If you are in your back garden, make sure your front doors and windows are fully closed.

·        If you are going out in the evening, leave a light on both downstairs

·        And upstairs.

·        Don't be distracted and allow someone in your house that you don't want.

·        Postcode your TV, video, hi-fi systems and other electrical items.

CASH SEIZURE SHOWS CRIME DOESN’T PAY

SEVEN victims of crime have received a share of over £84,000 after a successful cash seizure under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).

The cash seizure of £423,092.61 was made on 18 April 2006 following a lengthy investigation, since 2003, into various international advance fee frauds. An example of this type of crime would be where an individual attempts to obtain money in advance from the victim in order that the victim can access a purported later prize or reward.

The investigation by Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Financial Investigation Unit and the Fraud Squad resulted in the successful prosecution of two individuals involved in the frauds. Peter Rust, 57, of Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for money laundering in March. David Bampton, 40, of Toms Lane, Kings Langley was sentenced to 18 and 12 months’ imprisonment, to run concurrently, for furnishing forged information and forgery respectively, in April.

Following the convictions officers from the Western Area Money Laundering Team were then able to make an application of forfeiture under POCA legislation at Watford Magistrates Court on Monday 14 August 2006. A sum of £338,944.31 was successfully forfeited, and £84,148.30p was awarded to seven of Rust and Bampton’s victims.
