ANPR TARGETS CRIMINALS ON ROADS IN NORTH HERTS

HERTS POLICE are continuing to net results in their Operation Sentinel campaign to target criminals and illegal drivers in North Herts.

The Operation Sentinel Intercept Team, which makes use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to identify vehicles, was out in force in North Herts yesterday (August 12) leading to five arrests for offences including possession of Class A drugs and making off without payment.

A 20 year old man from Letchworth was arrested on suspicion of breaching a court order, theft from a motor vehicle, theft from a shop and making off with a pedal cycle. He has been released on police bail until September 26.

A 23 year old man from Letchworth came to the attention of officers after his vehicle showed no insurance, and was arrested for immigration offences. He is currently in police custody.

A 21 year old man from Luton was arrested on suspicion of making off from a service station in Essex without paying. He was released with a caution.

Thirty-one year old Satinder Sekhon from Bayworth, Letchworth was arrested and charged with shoplifting and is due to appear at Stevenage Magistrates Court on August 26.

A 37 year old man from Letchworth was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs and has been released on bail until September 21.

Results also included the seizure of four vehicles and seven Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) issued.

About ANPR:

An ANPR camera can read a number plate every second.
ANPR is a crime reduction and investigative tool - it targets criminals who use vehicles by reading number plates and comparing them against a variety of databases.
Its aim is to deny criminals the ability to move freely around the county to commit crimes
ANPR has led to the arrest of burglars, robbers and drug dealers, among others.
ANPR targets criminals, not innocent law abiding motorists.
ANPR not only reduces crime but can be used to reduce road deaths and serious injuries on the roads by highlighting un-roadworthy vehicles – drivers without insurance are more likely to have been involved in other crimes.
