MAN CHARGED WITH POST OFFICE ROBBERIES

A NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Stevenage man has been charged with a number of offences following two robberies at post office stores last week in North Hertfordshire.

Treymaine Davis from Oaks Cross, Stevenage appeared at Stevenage Magistrates Court on September 22 charged with:
1. A robbery at Whitwell Post Office, High Street, Whitwell on September 19. At around 7pm a man went into the store and threatened the female member of staff with a large kitchen knife, demanding money from the till and cigarettes. The offender was then seen to leave the store with the property and make off in a small black car.
2. Theft of a black Renault Clio from Denton Road, Stevenage sometime between September 16 and September 19.
3. A burglary at Denton Road, Stevenage between September 16 and September 19.
4. A robbery at Ashwell Stores, High Street, Ashwell on September 20. At around 6.25pm a man went into the store, threatened the male store owner and then made off, again in a small, dark-coloured vehicle with a quantity of cash and cigarettes.
5. Driving a motor vehicle with no insurance.
6. Driving a motor vehicle ‘otherwise than in accordance with a licence authorising the driving of a vehicle in this class’.

Davis was remanded in custody at the court hearing to reappear before Stevenage magistrates at a date yet to be fixed. He was arrested at around 10.45pm on September 20 after being pulled over by police in Staffordshire.

New legislation for child car restraints.

From Monday (September 18), new legislation will mean that anyone carrying

A child under the age of 12 or 135cm in height in their car will need to use approved child restraints such as a booster seat.

The legislation has been introduced in a bid to reduce child injuries and casualties on the road by up to 2000 a year nationally. The laws apply to any child carried in any car, even if you don't have children of your own but give someone else's child a lift.

Children over the age of 12 or 135cm tall (approx. 4ft 5in) can use an adult belt. Children under the age of three must continue to use a restraint appropriate for their weight in any vehicle (except a taxi if no restraints available).

There are a few exceptions which allow children to travel in the rear and use an adult seat belt:

In a taxi, if the right child restraint is not available;

For a short distance in an unexpected necessity, (for example emergency journey to hospital) if the right child restraint is not available;

Where two occupied child seats in the rear prevent the fitting of a third child seat.

An additional reminder that rear–facing baby seats must not be used in

A seat protected by a frontal air–bag unless the air–bag has been deactivated.

 Further information is available on the Department for Transport web site.
