DO YOU HAVE SPECIAL QUALITIES?

Are you someone who likes to put your spare time to good use? Do you look forward to a challenge? Would you like to feel that you are making a positive contribution to improving the quality of life within your own community?

If you can answer “yes” to these three questions, then you are exactly the sort of person who would make a good Special Constable!

The Special Constabulary is the auxiliary arm of the police service. Special Constables are front-line officers who work alongside their regular colleagues on a wide variety of duties throughout the week at times convenient to their personal circumstances. The minimum requirement is just 16 hours per month.

Although the majority of duty time is spent on high-profile patrols, often in “hotspots” which generate repeat complaints about anti-social behaviour,

Specials get involved in just about every aspect of policing. Many Specials are trained to enforce speed limits using state-of-the-art laser equipment, carry out observations, take elimination fingerprints from victims of crime and execute arrest warrants. Traffic and crowd control at public events, such as football matches, is another example of the duty undertaken by Specials. Experienced Specials drive police vehicles, and perform attachments to specialist departments such as Dog Section, Road Policing Unit and Air Support.

Special Constables wear the same uniform as their regular colleagues, and carry the same officer protection equipment (body armour, baton, handcuffs and incapacitant spray). They have the same powers of search and arrest within their area of jurisdiction.

Applicants must be of good character, in good health and aged between 18 and 50. Although Specials are volunteers, generous allowances are paid.

If you think that you have “special” qualities, why not contact our recruitment team on 0800 358 3990. Alternatively, if you want to discuss the role in more depth, contact County Commandant Peter Mould on 01923 472576. You could make all the difference!

BROTHEL MANAGER ORDERED TO PAY £136,000

A SUFFOLK woman convicted in June 2005 of managing brothels in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire was yesterday (September 8) ordered to pay over £136,000 at St Albans Crown Court.

Suzanna Culling, aged 38, from Earl’s Green, Haverhill, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment back in June having pleaded guilty to managing brothels in Berkhamsted, Radlett and Cambridge. Culling was arrested in July 2004 following a joint operation between Hertfordshire Constabulary and the Metropolitan Police’s Vice Unit.

Yesterday, Judge Cripps ordered that she pay £136,803 of the ‘available assets’ gained from her criminality. He also estimated that she had gained £1.67m from her crimes, which he set as the ‘benefit figure’. If these sums are traceable in the future, further assets could be seized from Culling.

The application to seize funds from Culling was brought by Hertfordshire Constabulary under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. Detective Inspector Jon Chapman commented: “This case indicates how we will work with the courts to rigorously enforce legislation, especially the Proceeds of Crime Act, to ensure people do not benefit from their criminal conduct.

“This is one of a number of cases that we are pursuing through the courts and anyone who is deemed to have benefited from a criminal lifestyle is likely to be stripped of the assets they have gained through offending.

“This is a key means of ensuring that criminals are unable to continue to profit from their activities.”

IS YOUR CREDIT CARD SAFE?

Text Box: Police are urging members of the public not to let their credit card out of sight as offenders find ways to commit fraud despite the introduction of the more secure Chip and PIN.

Fraudsters are getting around the problem of secure PIN numbers by attaching ‘false fronts’ onto ATM machines. These devices clone, or skim, the card whilst a small camera captures the PIN number as it is typed onto the keypad, all this is done without the cardholder becoming suspicious.

The threat of fraud can be worrying but Police are reassuring members of the public that there are ways to safeguard against it.

Using a cash machine:
- Before inserting your card check the machine to see if there is anything that looks unusual attached to it. If there is, or the machine is not fixed securely to the wall, report it to police and your bank immediately.
- Be aware that fraudsters often place ‘out of order’ signs on machines to force customers to use another one. In the same way they will often use the machines themselves to lull others into a false sense of security.
- If you are distracted by anyone when using a machine, cancel the transaction immediately.
- Be aware of large groups of people around a machine and under no circumstances be tempted to remove a device, they are expensive and fraudsters will often guard their equipment and resort to violence to protect it.
- Always ensure you have your own personal space. And when waiting to use a cash point machine yourself, give the person at the ATM plenty of space so they do not feel threatened.
- If your card is swallowed report it to the bank immediately. Do not re-enter your PIN.

Paying by Credit Card:

- Keep your card in sight at all times
- If your card is dropped or taken away, challenge the sales person directly.
- If you are using your card in an outlet that has a portable card machine, only hand over your card once the device has been brought to you
- Conceal your PIN when entering it and do not divulge it to anyone
- Cards should only be swiped in one machine, if your card is swiped in another device report it to police or your bank who can ensure your account is monitored or the card in question is cancelled.

Whilst these measures do not guarantee against credit card fraud they are the best way of safeguarding your card and your money against fraudsters.

Anyone with information about who is involved in credit card fraud can ring Crimstoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You may be entitled to a cash reward.
