A
professional sounding adult male phones the victim stating that he is calling
from BT Collection Service because money is owed to BT. The caller states that the victim’s bank has
stopped Direct Debit payment and that outstanding monies are owed immediately
and failure to pay will result in immediate loss of the telephone line. The amount owed is typically less than
£10. The caller asks for the victim’s
credit card details so that payment can be made. The caller also proves he can easily cut off the victim’s phone, telling them to hand up and try
dialling out. It is then believed he
puts them on “hold” so that the line is still connected, but of course the
victim believes their line has been disconnected. The offender then phones them back and again attempts to obtain
their credit card details. The main
object for the caller is not the payment of under £10, but the credit card
information.
Please
be aware that you should never give your credit card information over the phone
to anyone who calls YOU.
Should
you or any of your members receive suck a call then you should immediately
contact the BT Nuisance Call Bureau on 0800 411 422.
As a matter of some urgency:- Residents are being targeted over the telephone by Bogus Callers, pretending to be Police Officers, maybe saying that they are from the Fraud squad. They suggest that your bank account may have been compromised. The fact that the person already knows possibly your name and address and even bank, makes it all sound genuine.
IT’S A SCAM
The conversation from these individuals uses the ploy of saying that you can attend the Police station, and that an appointment will be made. They rely on you being too busy to attend and to avoid a possible trip to the station they persuade you to give away your personal bank accounts or credit card details over the phone. Several Policeman or Detective names are sometimes given and the call all sounds very genuine.
TWO men have been charged following the execution of
a drugs warrant at a house in Melbourn Road in Royston yesterday morning
(October 12).
21 year old Tuan Hoang and 41 year old Hoa Phan, who are both from Melbourn
Road in Royston, were charged with offences of cultivating cannabis and
abstracting electricity.
POLICE are appealing for information and witnesses
after a serious road traffic collision in Weston on Friday (October 23).The
incident occurred just before 9pm on Damask Green Road. On arrival at the scene
officers found that a quad bike had overturned and the driver, a 43 year old
man from Weston, had sustained serious head injuries. He was taken to the
Lister Hospital and was then transferred to a specialist neurology hospital in
London. He remains in a serious condition.
PC Kevin Sloan from the Road Crash Investigation Unit at Police Headquarters
said: “I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and believes
they saw the collision or the quad bike being ridden beforehand to contact the
Road Crash Investigation Unit via the non-emergency number 0845 3300 222, as
soon as possible
