CRIME STOPPERS

The only charity helping to solve crime – CRIMESTOPPERS

Crimestoppers operates across the UK to help identify, prevent, solve and reduce crime. This invaluable community service enables anyone with details of criminal activity to pass them on anonymously, without fear of exposure or retribution.

All it takes to pass on information is one call to 0800 555 111. Every call is treated with absolute anonymity so that nobody will know the identity of the caller, except you, the caller. Rewards are also available and are paid without compromising a caller’s anonymity.

Crimestoppers was set up in 1988 to break the wall of silence that surrounds most crime and that criminals exploit to avoid arrest. The anonymous number provided a lifeline to people who had information that they wanted to share but felt at risk from retribution.

The 0800 555 111 number ensures that no one need ever know who you are when you call. You will not be asked your name, your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to give a statement or go to court.

It’s a simple, secure service that allows us to put the police in the picture, without anyone knowing who provided the information that puts criminals to justice. Working in this way we have created a highly effective system built on integrity and trust that works for everyone - except criminals.

Local Crime and advice

Tack Rooms

As you will see from the crime figures below that we have had a number of tack thefts this month, one of the tack rooms that was broken into was the subject of a security visit from us, we did only three days before the theft occurred. Needless to say the security measures that we had advised were not in place. The majority of the tack rooms that have been broken into have very cheap security measures. If you have a tack room why not let us come and have a look at it, we can give you advise that will more than likely stop your tack from being stolen. We do offer a free tack marking service.

Thefts from vehicles have been on the menu in areas near ours

Hertfordshire has the third highest level of car ownership in the country, and the county's roads are some of the busiest roads nation-wide, being used by thousands of cars every day.

Unfortunately one third of all reported crime in the county relates to stolen vehicles and the theft of property from them - with nine out of 10 vehicles involved being cars.

Most car thieves do not plan their break-ins, but seize any opportunities they can, particularly when they see a car as an easy target.

If your car is broken into it may be damaged and in need of repair before you can use it again.

But of all crimes, car crime is probably the most preventable. Good security acts as a deterrent, slowing a thief down and forcing the use of tools that are hard to conceal.

Preventing theft from your vehicle

You are twice as likely to have something taken from your car than have your car stolen. Take the thief’s temptation away:

Remove your stereo or CD player if you can.

If you can’t remove your stereo or CD player, mark it with your registration number or use your postcode followed by your house number.

Any other valuables you take into your car regularly should be marked in the same way.

Don’t leave valuables like handbags or credit cards on display. Take them with you or put them out of sight in the boot or under a seat.

About 40 per cent of car break-ins involve the theft of a mobile phone. Mark your phone and battery with your postcode and keep a note of its serial number in a safe place.

Even leaving an empty bag on display can be a temptation - a thief may think it contains something valuable. So keep bags out of sight.

Parking your vehicle

Car parks and areas near people’s homes are the main places from which vehicles are stolen or items are taken from them.

If you’ve got a garage, use it and remember to lock it.

If you haven’t got a garage or if you are away from home, try to park in a well-lit open area.

If you park on your own drive, reverse the car in. The doors will then open the wrong way for a thief wanting protection.

Park in a public car park, which is supervised, has restricted entry and exit points, is well lit and has security cameras. Avoid dark corners.

Look out for car parks, which have won a Secured Car Park award for their design, which have recognised levels of security.

Take your ticket with you when you leave the car (unless it is a pay and display area). This could stop a car thief from driving out of the car park.

Put your aerial down to stop it being vandalised.

HERTFORDSHIRE Constabulary has again been assessed as a “Good “ force by the HMIC baseline assessment.

Chairman of Hertfordshire Police Authority, Ian Laidlaw-Dickson, said: “The HMICs assessment confirms our belief that Hertfordshire has a very good police force. This is the second year running that Hertfordshire has received a good report and I congratulate the Constabulary’s officers and police staff for their continuing hard work and dedication. The assessments also identify areas for improvement and I am aware that many of these are already being addressed by the Constabulary. The Police Authority will continue to work with the Constabulary to ensure that standards and performance can be raised even higher.”

The Force was assessed on 26 categories, which can be graded excellent, good, fair or poor. The Constabulary received two excellent (volume crime investigation and performance management/continuous improvement), 20 goods, four fair and no poor grades. The HMIC was impressed by Hertfordshire’s initiatives to investigate and arrest people involved in burglary, robbery and motor vehicle crime and rated these as excellent. They also rated excellent the Constabulary’s systems to drive and continuously improve its performance – in particular where senior officers and managers are regularly held to account for their performance.
