Heating Oil Security

 Now a high-value commodity.

§         MOVE IT: If the tank is located away from the house, move it closer where you can keep a better eye on it

§         SCREEN IT: If the tank can be seen from the road, then screen it with fencing or hedging.

§         CAGE IT: Consider building a metal cage around it with a secure entrance gate.

§         CONCEAL PIPE WORK: Reduce the locations that it can be attacked. Conceal external pipe work.

§         CUT THE POWER SUPPLY: Ensure that any electrical control boxes or switches are in a secure environment. (Your house?)

§         BLOCK VEHICLE ACCESS: Keep vehicles as far away from your tank as possible, Use locked gates, parking posts or hooped barriers. Install a driveway alert monitor

§         INVEST IN GOOD LIGHTING: Fit movement activated lighting and consider the type that activates a buzzer in the house when it switches on. Adjust the sensitivity to prevent false alarms.

§         CHECK YOUR HOME INSURANCE: Ensure that your home insurance covers you for the loss/theft of your heating oil.

Rural/Horse Watch

Please be aware that during the last few weeks Police in Bedfordshire have received a number of reports of stray horses and ponies.

There is no evidence to suggest that these horses have been let out intentionally, but have simply escaped through insecure gates and fences.

As many horses are being turned out, we would ask land owners to take the time to check that the fields are secure and that gates are closed at all times. Returning a lost horse to the owner can be costly and takes up valuable Police time.

Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious visitors or vehicles immediately on the Police non emergency number 0845 3300222

HARE COURSING CONVICTION FOLLOWING INCIDENT IN NORTH HERTS

45 year old Jimmy Cash from Lybury Way in Redbourn has been given a two year anti-social behaviour order (ASBO), following a conviction in connection with an incident which occurred in North Herts.

The order, which was issued by Stevenage Magistrates Court on Thursday, June 5, prohibits him from:

• Entering as a trespasser whilst a pedestrian or in a vehicle, any agriculture farmland or land privately owner, whilst in control, possession or in the company of any dog bred or used or could be used for the purpose of hare coursing, whether or not the dog is owned by him, in the counties of Hertfordshire or Cambridgeshire.

Jimmy Cash was convicted of an offence contrary to the New Hunting Act 2004 and another contrary to poaching in connection with an incident which occurred at around 8am on October 21, 2008, on Sandon Road in Therfield.

PC Paul Marina has been dealing with the case and said: “Hare coursing has a very negative effect on our rural communities and it is important we target those responsible. This is the first ASBO in Hertfordshire for a hare coursing offence and I hope this sends a clear message that the police, working with the Crown Prosecution Service, will use all the tools at their disposal to tackle incidents of this nature.”
