On The 12th June we received a report of two males turning up at an elderly residents address and striking up a conversation with her.  The two males then spread manure in the residents’ garden without her consent and charged he £50 for this. There is no other descriptions of the males other than they were driving a white transit van. Please be aware of this and warn any vulnerable residents you may know of in your area to be wary of traders who operate in this manner.

THIS SUMMER DON’T NAVIGATE INTO THE WRONG HANDS

The number of Satellite Navigation System thefts has fallen by a third after seeing a peak in March this year.

Last month (May) there were 67 ‘sat navs’ reported stolen as opposed to 101 incidents in March so police would like to thank members of the public for taking their crime prevention advice on board.

Detective Superintendent Jane Swinburne said: “These are positive results but we do not want to become complacent. Satellite Navigation Systems are valuable items and are a favourite with any opportunist thief. Every vehicle that is stolen, broken into or damaged belongs to someone who will have to deal with the consequences.”

Police Officers across the county have been taking part in on-going operations to tackle the thefts of ‘sat navs’using a number of crime prevention initiatives.

At 8.20pm on Thursday 15th June, a distraction burglary occurred at the address of an elderly lady in Ashwell Street, Ashwell.  A male attended the address claiming to be from the water board, he told the lady that a nearby house was flooding and that her water needed to be disconnected.  The lady was instructed to take a seat in her living room whilst the man carried out his “work”.  A short time later the lady noticed a second man in her kitchen and became suspicious, at this stage she asked the men to leave and sent them in the direction of a relative who lived nearby.  Once the males had left, the lady discovered that the upstairs of her house had been ransacked and a quantity of money had been taken.  The males responsible are described as being white males aged approximately 40 years old, one being stockier build than the other.  (Crime no G4/06/635).

At 8pm on Friday 23rd June, a 14-year-old girl received bruising and grazes after she was punched in the face following a verbal altercation in Lucas Lane, Ashwell.  The male responsible is described as a white male, aged 16 – 17 years, large muscular build, he was wearing a black hooded top and black trousers (Crime no. G4/06/664).

Overnight between 6.30pm on Wednesday 28th and 8am on Thursday 29th June, a summerhouse situated in the rear garden of a property in Radwell, was broken into.  The person responsible broke a window and removed a shutter in order to gain access.  The property owner happened to notice a male in the area the previous evening that he felt was acting suspiciously.  The male is described as white, tall and slim, brown hair and at the time he was wearing a grey T-shirt with white writing on

(Crime no. G4/06/681).

A distraction burglary occurred at the address of an elderly gentleman in Haywood Lane, Therfield, just after 2pm on Tuesday 13th June.  A man knocked at the door of the victims’ house and claimed to be from the water board and headed straight for the kitchen.  The man asked the victim to run the taps and also boil the kettle as the pipes needed cleaning, he continued to distract the elderly male for approximately 15 minutes before leaving the address swiftly.  Once the male had left it was established that a further two males had been inside the house searching the other rooms.  It is believed that the three males left the area in the direction of the A10 in a gold or beige coloured Mercedes.  It is also believed that they left empty-handed.  (Crime no. MAN FOUND GUILTY OF DARREN’S MANSLAUGHTER

A MAN from Welwyn Garden City has been found guilty at the Old Bailey today (June 27) of the manslaughter of 37-year-old Darren Knight in Royston last October.

46-year-old Graham Willis from Little Hardings, Welwyn Garden City was arrested in Norfolk two days after Darren died of a severe head injury following an altercation in Jeps Lane, Royston in the early hours of October 9, 2005. Darren, from Reading, died a short time later at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

Willis has been sentenced to three years and nine months imprisonment.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Hanlon, from the Constabulary’s Major Crime Task Force said: “Darren was an innocent man who was out for the evening with his girlfriend and friends when he was attacked by Willis. Willis totally overreacted to a drunken phone call from his daughter, which led to Darren’s assault which proved fatal. Willis knew what he had done and within hours disposed of his car and was caught when he was fleeing the area.
