A disproportionate amount of shed/garage beaks occurring in the G4E area, this month, we do get these increases in crime, these normally stop as soon as they begin. I am pleased to say that the average monitory value amount of property stolen was small. The thing that I am not happy about is that some of the properties broken into had received security advice from us less than a month before but had not implemented our advice. The advice below was the given out by me in October when there seemed to be a increase in these types of offences in Cambridgeshire, please take the offer up.

Shed/garage and workshop breaks seem to have been on the menu for thieves over the past few weeks. Shed alarm cost £6.50 and can be purchased from our crime prevention officers. To request any items, Cheques to be made out to 'North Herts Crime Prevention Panel' and to go to Dennis WALL, CPO Hitchin Police Station, College Road, Hitchin. 01462 677249, 07766064675

Be aware - keep an eye open for bogus callers

Although Hertfordshire remains one of the safest counties in which to live and work and the reality of crime is low, some people still feel very threatened about becoming a victim.

We understand one of the main fears people have is about being burgled. Our continual focus on tackling this crime has resulted in a significant drop in home burglaries - year on year.

Regardless of this success, burglary remains an extremely distressing experience, particularly when the victims have been befriended by a doorstep caller with whom they've placed trust or been offered help. These criminals are most commonly known as bogus callers - to the police these criminals are referred to as artifice or distraction burglars.

One of the best ways to tackle crimes committed by bogus callers is to make as many people as possible aware of how such criminals work, so you can reduce the chances of yourself, your friends, neighbours or relatives becoming a victim. It is also important you know what to do if you suspect a crime has occurred. They dress up in boiler suits and say they are from the water or gas board claiming there has been a reported leak, which would need them to enter the house to investigate. They might ask the resident to tell their neighbours that they are making rounds. And as neighbours trust each other’s word, more doors are opened for the thieves to steal from people’s homes. They get into communal flats by ringing any bell and telling whoever answers that they are delivering a parcel to another flat. Once inside they will change their story to gain entry into people’s homes. For example they could say they are from the council and have come to measure up for new windows because of draughts. Another way bogus callers could try to gain entry is by asking for a glass of water, or needing to make an urgent phone call because their car has broken down. Whilst the householder is distracted by helping them, a second or even third burglar may gain entry. One routine is knocking on the front door and telling the occupant that their younger sister or brother has accidentally smashed a window at the back of the house. As the householder goes to investigate, an accomplice can be in and out in a matter of seconds.

If anyone calls at your house that you are not expecting and you have the slightest suspicion please call 999 and let us be the judge of their intentions.

ARRESTS INCREASED IN HERTFORDSHIRE

HERTFORDSHIRE Constabulary increased the number arrests in the county by more than six times the national average according to a report released today by the Government Office for National Statistics.

The number of arrests for recorded crime in Hertfordshire increased by 13% between 2003/4 and 2004/5 from 18,383 to 20,775 – an increase of 2,392 arrests. This compares to a national increase for England and Wales of 2%. Hertfordshire Constabulary had the sixth largest increase out of the 43 forces covered in the report.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Beckley said: “These encouraging figures build on similar increases in the number of arrests by the Hertfordshire Constabulary in previous years and reflects the growth in both police numbers and experience in the County. The increase in arrests also reflects the hard work of both officers and staff and our use of police tactics to proactively target both criminals and areas where crime problems are occurring and drive down crime in the county.”
