Hare Coursers Caught in Ashwell

Residence of Ashwell may have wondered what the Police Helicopter was doing over Ashwell on Sunday 28th March. Well, about 10.00 we had a report of a single hare courser on farm land by Station road, Ashwell. We all rushed out there and as I have friends in the air support unit the Police Helicopter was scrambled and they found a strange vehicle on the track behind Sunnymead Orchard. This vehicle was tracked by the Helicopter and whilst on the public footpath the front seat passenger was seen to change seats with the driver. The vehicle was stopped by a marked unit on the road to Newnham. There were five coursing dogs in the rear, all the three occupants had slip leads so all the occupants were arrested for conspiracy to hare course. Although the vehicle was insured by the driver the passenger did not have insurance and as he had been seen to drive it in a public place (the footpath) we seized it and both the driver and passenger were dealt with for the offence of ‘No Insurance’ I interviewed all three of them and two admitted hare coursing offences and have been dealt with.

This was the second vehicle that we have seized this month from hare coursers and over 60% of arrests in my area are for hare coursing offences.

We have been adopting a zero tolerance for hare coursing for sometime and we are arresting more that we ever have done before.

Computer Fraud

How about this for a simple fraud;- someone has reported to us that all the people in their personal e mail address book were contacted by email and this is a brief outline of the mail that was sent out to them. Hi, I am in Spain and I need some money as I have had all my credit cards stolen, please can you put £300 into my new account (numbers supplied). You guest it, it was a con, and luckily enough no one fell for it

Barbecue Fire Safety Advice

As the weather brightens, and we leave behind the gloom of winter, people will begin to dust off their barbeques and look forward to enjoying the summer.

Barbeques are often a great way to spend your leisure time but they have their own set of unique fire risks that should not be underestimated. However, some common-sense preparation can ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Barbecues

A barbecue should be a safe and enjoyable experience but it's all too easy to be distracted when you have friends and family around you whilst cooking. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple precautions:

General Safety

·         Make sure your barbecue is in good working order.

·         Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs.

·         Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area.

·         Never leave the barbecue unattended.

·         Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies.

·         Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it.

Charcoal Barbecues

·         Use only enough charcoal to cover the base to a depth of about 50mm (2 inches).

·         Only use recognised fire lighters or starter fuel and only on cold coals - use the minimum necessary and never use petrol.

·         Never put hot ashes straight into a dustbin or wheelie bin - they could melt the plastic and cause a fire.

Gas Barbecues

·        Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder.

·        Change cylinders outdoors if possible or in a well ventilated area.

·        If you suspect a leak to the cylinder or pipe work, brush soapy water around the joints and watch for bubbles - tighten to fix but do not over tighten.

·        After cooking, turn off the gas cylinder before turning off at the controls to ensure any residual gas in the pipe work is used up.
