If your card is used or stolen you are fully protected by the UK Banking Code. The Code is a voluntary system that sets out standards for good banking practice, including limiting liability for cardholders that are victims of fraud. Under the Code, if someone else uses your card before you tell your card issuer it has been lost or stolen or that someone else knows your PIN, the most you will have to pay, in theory, is £50.
In practice the bank or building society will usually refund the full amount lost. But if the cardholder were negligent, for example, by keeping their PIN near their card, they would have to meet all the losses.
If your card is used fraudulently but you still have the card in your possession you will not be liable to pay for any part of the losses. You would probably still have your card in your possession if you are a victim of counterfeit skimming or card-not-present fraud.
Taking care of your cards, chequebooks and PINs is essential to help prevent fraud and protect your accounts. If you notice any unrecognised transactions on your statement, or if your card is missing, report it to your card issuer immediately.
To help protect yourself from becoming a victim of card fraud, Card Watch recommends you follow these helpful tips:
· Guard your card
· Don't let it out of your sight when making a transaction.
· Carefully discard receipts from card transactions and other personal information (shred them if possible to prevent 'bin divers' from acquiring information about you and your cards)
· Check your statements carefully. If you find an unfamiliar transaction contact your card issuer immediately.
· Never write down your PIN and never disclose it to anyone, even if they claim to be from your card issuer or the police.
·
When using a cash machine, be wary of
anyone who might be trying to watch you enter your PIN and do not allow
yourself to be distracted by anyone trying to talk to you.
Skimming happens when someone copies the magnetic stripe on a credit or debit card by swiping it through a small card reader. This can happen in shops, restaurants or anywhere where you might pay with your card, and it results in your card details being used to make a counterfeit card.
Guard your card and never let it out of your sight when making a transaction, and don't carelessly discard receipts as they carry information about your card that a fraudster could use to buy things over the phone or internet. Check your receipts against your statements carefully, and if you don't recognise a purchase, contact your card issuer immediately.
Sign new cards as soon as they arrive and
make sure you cut up your old card as soon as the new one becomes valid. Don't
keep your chequebook with your cards, and look after all your personal
possessions properly. And report lost or stolen cards to your card issuer
immediately, a 24-hour emergency number is usually shown on your statement

There has
been a series of Burglaries throughout South Cambridgeshire, where the victims
have been elderly females. A variety of entry methods have been used which have
included ‘Distraction’ and the use of ‘Force’. The descriptions of the
Offenders have varied, suggesting that more than one team of offenders is
active. The Peak time is between 17.00 - 18.00 and the Shelford villages have
been identified as a particular Hot spot area. A Dark Blue Mercedes Vito Van
with blacked out rear windows has been seen around some of the areas that have
been targeted. When you have suspicions about a vehicle please take the
registration number, take your time and make sure you have taken the correct
details and please call 999 and report it.

Between Sunday 29th January and Friday 3rd February, an attempt was made to break into a barn located in Pudding Lane, Barley. There is a possibility that those responsible may have been looking for tack, as other items were not touched. The attempt however was unsuccessful and the thieves left empty handed. (Crime no. G4/06/142).
During the very early hours of Sunday 5th February, three cars were damaged whilst they were parked in the car park belonging to the Chequers Inn, Barley. Several car windows were smashed and Police are currently making enquiries with regards to the person responsible. (Crime no. G4/06/155).
At 10.40pm on Monday 6th February, patrolling Officers stopped a motorist in Royston Road, Barley, to speak to the driver regarding his manner of driving. The Officers had reason to suspect that the driver had consumed alcohol. Following a roadside breath test, a 38 year old male was arrested for driving whilst over the legal alcohol limit. (Crime no. At approximately 3.50pm on Tuesday 14th February, a vigilant local resident noticed a suspicious male in the grounds of one of the neighbouring properties in Redhill, Rushden. When the neighbour stopped to ask the male what he was doing, the male said that he was trying to find out directions to Foxton. Before the witness could pass the directions, the suspicious male got into the passenger seat of a waiting blue or grey Volkswagen Golf which drove away along the Redhill Road. The neighbour became increasingly suspicious and decided to make enquiries at the address, there he found that several window frames had been damaged, it would appear that the male had tried to jemmy at least three windows using a chisel but had been unsuccessful in his attempts to gain access. The vehicle the males were travelling is described as a blue or grey Volkswagen Golf, registration N133OYL. (Crime no. G3/06/141).
At approximately 5.30pm on Thursday 16th February, two males let themselves in through the unlocked front door of a house in Mill End, Rushden. The two males did not seem put off by the fact that the occupant of the house was at home and they went on to ransack the house. Although the elderly resident was not subjected to physical violence, she has been left understandably traumatised by the events that occurred. The males left the premises empty handed via the front door and it is not known if they used a vehicle to leave the area. The culprits are described as both being white males aged between 25 and 30 years old, one of the males was wearing a navy blue hooded top and spoke with a local accent. (Crime no. G3/06/149).
At approximately 4am on Sunday 19th February, vandals used concrete blocks to smash the windows of a JCB and a road roller, which had been parked in Wallington Road, Baldock. (Crime no. G3/06/162).

Perhaps those responsible for the theft of the Ford Escort were responsible for the following crime. At 10.30pm on Sunday 19th February, a Mitsubishi Pick-up was broken into whilst it was parked in Fore Street, Weston. Significant damage was caused to the vehicle locks and large quantities of tools were stolen. One of the males responsible is described as a white male, 5ft10”, small to average build, aged 20’s, with distinctive side burns. The male was wearing a big baggy shirt, white trainers, a flat cap and possibly khaki coloured trousers. (Crime no. G3/06/164).
At 7pm on Sunday 19th February, a fire was started inside a barn located on the Clothall Road, Baldock. The barn, which was destroyed in the fire, contained straw bales and fencing. A tractor that had been parked nearby was also destroyed. The total cost of damages is thought to be in the region of £135,000.00 and enquiries are in hand to locate those responsible. (Crime no. G3/06/171).
ROGUE TRADERS
Update in relation about the four alleged rouge traders who recently appeared
at Stevenage Magistrates Court charged with money laundering, blackmail and
rogue trading offences.
All four individuals have been remanded into custody until March 7 when they
are due to appear at Luton Crown Court. Because of the complexities around the
case it has now emerged that TWO not one of the suspects are juveniles aged 14
and 17 and both from Bedfordshire. The two adults remain a 47-year-old man and
a 50-year-old woman also from Bedfordshire. Magistrates have imposed court
reporting restrictions preventing the release of any information that could
lead to the identity of the two youths which means that the names of the adults
cannot be used unless the presiding judge changes their minds about naming.
