2nd April 2015 to 20th March 2016

Stanley Spencer Gallery

Commencing on 2nd April 2015, the Gallery will display an unprecedented combination of fine Spencer paintings, including the full permanent Spencer collections of Aberdeen City Art Gallery and Leeds City Art Gallery.

‘The Creative Genius of Stanley Spencer’ will include both the Aberdeen and Leeds Spencer collections in their entirety, together with selected hauntingly profound works from the Gallery’s own collection and others loaned from private collectors. The resulting exhibition will exemplify the extraordinary diversity of Spencer's output and the breadth of his creative genius. Included will be an astonishing series of passionate spiritual works, a set of flower and garden works showing the exquisite detail of Spencer’s work, and a moving series of figurative work reflecting Spencer’s joys and anguish in his complex personal life.

Thursday 4th June at 7pm

Banksy – Urban Calligrapher Professor Paul Gough will return to the Gallery to talk about the modern art phenomenon that is ‘Banksy’. Through interviews, clandestine meetings and email Paul gleaned material for his book about the retrospective exhibition of Banksy’s work held in Bristol in 2009. In six weeks over 300,000 people queued day and night, often in the pouring rain, to view the work of this fascinating artist. Paul Gough examines both the exhibition and the impact of ‘Banksy’ and assesses the place of this secretive and controversial artist in our modern culture.
