Welcome to BCS, (Books & Conservation Services). Based in Berkshire, our BirdBooks service aims to encourage ornithologists, bird watchers and natural history buffs to obtain the very latest titles which will help them gain more experience and knowledge about our fascinating wildlife.

We also wish to promote the protection and conservation of wildlife and to enable nature watchers and those keen to know more about birds and other creatures to contribute to local conservation when obtaining the latest books of their choice. When you order a wildlife title from Birdbooks, we pass 15% for each book ordered to your local Ornithological club or Natural History Group to support their work in promoting wildlife welfare in the region. So you will not only be buying from a fantastic range of books, but also supporting conservation in doing so.

NEW!! We have decided to make a similar offer on non-wildlife titles. Now you can order ANY book from the site and on these other titles, 10% of cover price will go to your local conservation group.

Simply select your books you require, fill in the order form, nominate the local conservation group you would like to receive the commission and send it to the address on the bottom with a cheque made out to BCS. For further information about any title, contact us at BCS@btconnect.com. Alternatively, you may wish to pay the 10% or 15% direct to your chosen club, and the remaining 90% or 85% to us. RECENT BOOK NEWS

The long-awaited Gulls book from Helm is now available. Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America (Olsen and Larsson) was withdrawn for technical reasons shortly after initial publication but has now been re-produced, and represents probably the fullest expose of this subject so far published. With 600 pages of full descriptions, amazing illustrations and sumptuous photographs, it is worth every one of its £45. So if you have been waiting for this important guide to hit the shelves, NOW is the time to order it from our site, ensuring £6.75 goes to your local conservation group. ISBN 0-7136-7087-8

Birdwatching is now a serious past-time for many people and a significant business for suppliers of outdoor clothing, optics and bird feed. But few know much about the history of ornithology. Michael Walters addresses this in his book A Concise History of Ornithology (Helm, hbk, ISBN 1-873403-92-5). The lives of the founding characters in the world of birds and their study are examined as is the way their work and understanding has helped blur the distinction between hobby and useful science. A book not just for the academic but for all who wonder how avian systematics was originated, and how this led to modern day ornithology, it is a book to be added to the shelf.  -  cost £30, with £4.50 from BirdBooks to your local club.

Budding artists will be pleased that Drawing Birds (John Busby) has been released in a second edition by Helm. Fully revised and updated, the book will give inspiration and encouragement both to beginners and those with some experience.  £19,99 sbk ISBN 0-7136-6816-4

Britain’s Dragonflies (Smallmarsh and Swash) is quite possibly the best photographic guide of these fascinating creatures on the shelves today. Recently published by WILDGuides, it follows their pioneering technique of digital photo montage presentation, to aid identification.  £15 hbk, ISBN 1-903657-04-0.

Ian Wallace is a name associated with traditional field craft and observation skills and his latest book not only explains his own decades of wonderment bur looks back over 100 years, exploring events and people that have influenced his experience and enjoyment of wildlife. His latest book Beguiled by Birds is therefore guaranteed to be a popular read, especially as it is illustrated throughout with the authors own paintings and photographs. Helm, £29.99 ISBN 0-7136-6535-1

Many RSPB groups and wildlife clubs have already benefited from BCS donations. Make sure your own group knows about this service.
