Birdwatching
is now a serious past-time for many people and a significant
business for suppliers of outdoor clothing, optics and bird feed.
But few know much about the history of ornithology. Michael
Walters addresses this in his book A
Concise History of Ornithology (Helm, hbk, ISBN
1-873403-92-5). The lives of the founding characters in the world
of birds and their study are examined as is the way their work and
understanding has helped blur the distinction between hobby and
useful science. A book not just for the academic but for all who
wonder how avian systematics was originated, and how this led to
modern day ornithology, it is a book to be added to the shelf. - cost £30,
with £4.50 from BirdBooks to your local club.
Budding
artists will be pleased that Drawing
Birds (John Busby) has been released in a second edition by
Helm. Fully revised and updated, the book will give inspiration
and encouragement both to beginners and those with some
experience. £19,99
