Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was honest and
uncompromising in recording the changes in his features. In this second,
painted self-portrait he still appears a noticeably youthful figure. Painted
in rich, warm colours, it was sold for 20 guineas in his successful Goupil
Gallery exhibition of 1927, which helped to confirm his reputation.
