Child in a High Chair - 1943

Oil and pencil on canvas,  19in x 24.5in

A portrait of George Birt, grandson of Lars Larson, founder of the British and Northern Shipping Agency Ltd, who rented 'Lindworth' in Cookham during the war. 'Lindworth', Spencer's former home, had been made over to his second wife, Patricia Preece, who let it out in 1938. Next to the portrait is a drawing made at the same time; unusually the canvas has not been cut, so the images conjoin.
